One year after her collaboration with Japanese composer and percussionist Midori Takada and the feature in a Ah! Kosmos!’s track, Egyptian-Iranian Los Angeles-based artist, singer and songriter Lafawndah released the first full-lenght Ancestor Boy in 2019. Now she has released the follow-up.

The Fifth Season is out now via Latency and it features  Nick Weiss (keyboards), Theon Cross (tuba), Nathaniel Cross (trombone) and Valentina Magaletti (percussion). According to the press release, it is inspired by her encounter with author NK Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy, Lafawndah both pays homage to and extends further the elemental, emotionally charged myths of Jemisin’s books.

These are stories where a broken heart can tear apart a continent. In contrast to the precision-tuned industrial productions of Ancestor Boy, The Fifth Season breathes a different kind of volatility. Inviting a new degree of spontaneity and freedom into her process with her collaborators the result is an iridescent, cinematic chamber-bass movement.

She has shared a new video for the track “Le Malentendu”. It was directed by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel. Watch it below.
