Gabríel Ólafs is a Icelandic pianist and composer. At just 19, the composer and pianist wowed viewers and a live audience on Icelandic TV during his first ever live performance, where he was discovered by Björk’s manager Derek Birkett. Back in 2019, he released the first full-length Absent Minded.

He returns with his stripped-back yet beautifully intricate Piano Works, a collection of reimagined arrangements released as part of an ambitious deconstructive series by One Little Indian Records. It will be out on June 26th. “Birta” is the first excerpt. He explains:

“Even though we recorded it during a very dark and stormy night in Reykjavík, Birta means ‘shining light’ in Icelandic. It’s relevant now as it was recently our holiday of First Summer’s Day, the day we finally get a little sunlight. It’s also the name of my dog that spends a lot of time with me in my studio.”
