Butcher Brown are a Richmond-based band comprised of Tennishu, Morgan Burrs, Corey Fonville, Andrew Randazzo, and DJ Harrison. They’re back with a new track titled “Tidal Wave“. According to the press release, The band merges the Ronnie Laws jazz fusion song “Tidal Wave” from 1975 with Black Moon’s 1993 underground rap classic, “Who Got The Props?” which samples the Ronnie Laws original.

They explain: “This was one of the very first songs we started during our ten-day block of recording back in October. We were on a break, reminiscing on old songs that inspired us through the merging of Jazz & Hip-hop. We threw some ideas around, and Corey casually threw out, “Aye yo what about that ‘Who Got The Props’ joint by Black Moon?” Everyone was silent, but it was the kind of silence that meant we dug the idea. Within minutes, DJ Harrison walked back inside and pulled up the original sample by Ronnie Laws (Tidal Wave), and then we checked out the Black Moon version. Before we knew it, DJ was writing out chord changes for everyone and then we pressed record! Both the sample and original remind us of our childhood, and music our parents would play. We hope it takes you back for that same moment we had and then pushes you forward again.”
