Ad Astra is a new Italian Festival which is born from the collaboration of two of the most important realities of Southern Italy: MAT Laboratorio Urbano and SPARKS Festival. The contamination between languages, arts and styles is the concept behind the festival. It will take place on March 20th and 21st in Terlizzi at MAT Laboratorio Urbano. Two headliners were announced today: Teebs and Portico Quartet. Check the official facebook event here.

Teebs is the project of American producer and visual artist Mtendere Mandowa. He recenlty released his third album Anicca (out via Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder) which features great guests as Panda Bear (Animal Collective), Sudan Archives, Ringgo Ancheta aka MNDSGN, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Anna Wise, daydream Masi, Former Boy, Pink Siifu, Jimetta Rose and Thomas Stankiewicz.

Two years after Art in the Age of Automation, London-based band Portico Quartet released a new album in 2019. Memory Streams is out via Gondwana Records. For saxophonist Jack Wyllie, it “feels in some ways about the identity of the quartet, about the records we’ve made before, and the memory of them”, whereas for drummer Duncan Bellamy it suggests “a torrent of imagery, accessing and reliving archived memories, which perhaps aren’t  even your own”.

According to the press release, Sonically, ‘Memory Streams’ embraces the classic PQ palette of drums, saxophone, bass and hang-drums, but nonetheless the output has modulated, become more modern, whilst still channeling the beauty and mystery which has always marked the very best of their music. It’s the sound of an outfit at ease with itself, who after a dozen years of recording and playing together, are able to simultaneously explore and embrace their own identity.
