We asked to different musicians, producers, bloggers, journalists, label owners to make a short list of their best albums of this year. This is the list curated by Japanese experimental music artist and musician Kazuya Nagaya.
The Undivided Five – A Winged Victory for the Sullen. Post-classical ambient music. I`ve been listening to their albums since their debut. Melancholic and minimalistic with strings ensemble and upright piano. One of my most favorite ambient artists in the present age.
Secret of the Beehive (2019 Vinyl Edition) – David Sylvian. Reissue of his third album with the same title released in 1987. Beautiful songs with his beautiful voice. He is my hero since I was a teenager. His songs composed with Ryuichi Sakamoto are my most favorite ones of all time.
Virthulegu Forseter – Johan Johannsson. Reissue of his stunning classic album released in 2004. It consists with mostly brasses but the compositions themselves are quiet and with a bit of eerie atmosphere. I wish he were still alive and composed further beautiful music. What a loss that we miss him.
Children of the Universe – Costanza Francavilla. Soundtrack from the movie with the same title. The combination with her modular synth and the acoustic strings is amazingly beautiful. Love her music not only this album but also her other soundtracks. Her soundtrack for the trailer of Blade Runner 2049” is stunning too.
All Encores – Nils Frahm. Contains quiet piano ensembles and other ambient works with less notes and less layers of sound. The songs “Talisman” is so beautiful! One of my most favorite songs of him.
