“What’s goin’ on?”, Marvin Gaye’s question is totally current and Led Zeppelin would probably answer “Good times, bad times”. Actually, many of the best releases of the ending year are polarized between the will to toughly face the negative aspects of the present chaos and the need to escape from it, finding shelter in delicacy, intimacy, faint suffering. This is why among my favorites you will find peak of poetry (Nick Cave and The National above all) and abyss of dark moods and disenchanted looks (dark wave from Health and Boy Harsher, gothic pop from the beloved Twilight Sad). Finally, a mention for Massimo Volume, a legend of italian post rock, and their obscure masterpiece.
