Happy Axe is the project of Australian singer and multi-instrumentalist Emma Kelly. Two days ago she released her debut album titled Dream Punching. It is out now via Spirit Level.  We already shared a couple of tracks; now full streaming is available via Bandcamp. Listen below.

Her words about the release:

This music for me ties into memories of my childhood. I think my parents liked plants more than people, but that meant we always lived in these really beautiful faraway places – like Belmore Falls, a rainforest-like place way out in a national park.

It was the most beautiful untouched place where you could walk to these amazing waterfalls and bits of forest that nobody else knew about or ever went near. My childhood was so quiet, and I was surrounded by nature and beauty. It was a really introspective time in my life that I’ll probably never have again, as I’d never isolate myself that much by choice.

It intrigues me to think about that mood, and that place, and when I write music it often takes me back there. It’s a really magical feeling to bring some past time or place back into the now, make a memory real again through music and sound. I like the idea that I’ve built my own little world on this album, and I hope people listening can discover that world and maybe that helps them make sense of things in their own life.

The album is also about wanting to challenge the everyday patterns and expectations that are put on us by society and sometimes by the people in our lives. I want to invite adventurousness or even a kind of defiance – a confidence to break out of expectations and do or be something different
