Mica Levi, also known as Micachu of Micachu and The Shapes, and cellist Oliver Coates have teamed up for a collaborative full-length. Remain Calm will be out on November 25th via UK label Slip.”Barok Main” is the first excerpt. Listen below.
Remain Calm is the work of two artists well-versed in the classical music tradition, but keen to blur its lines into more contemporary styles like grime, techno and drone. Borne out of an impromptu jam on Mica Levi’s regular NTS radio show, the pair subsequently retreated to a flat in South London to improvise further. The resulting sounds have been chopped and screwed together with the Slip crew to produce a series of 13 beguiling miniatures, linked by a sense of haunted pastoral decay. Shades of Iannis Xenakis, Aphex Twin, Burial and Scott Walker’s film music are suggested in certain passages, but the sum of its parts are a very singular soundworld and a stunning piece of work.
